why I am writing my will at 20s.
I'm in my twenties, and I'm writing a will.
Sounds early, right? That's exactly the problem. Most of us think wills are for the old or the rich, the same way we think investing is for the rich. I used to think so too wnd sadly we're all victims of the idea.
So what do I actually own? A struggling business that I'm still building. A small savings pot I dip into on cloudy days. An Android phone (it's not iPhone).x A SIM card. An M-Pesa account with an M-Shwari loan hanging over my neck and debt collectors roaming the field. And a head full of achievable ideas.
If something happened to me tomorrow, who would even know where to look? How would my people find my little gold, or reach it, starting with not having my M-Pesa PIN?
That question stuck with me after a story from Nairobi. A property dispute that dragged through the courts for over two decades. Two people connected to it shot dead, eleven months apart. Police say a land dispute was the motive in one of the killings and are still investigating. Nothing has been proven in court.
I'm not here to judge. I'm here because it shows what happens when ownership isn't clear. Still, clarity can prevail even in the midst of chaos.
A small assignment: check for unclaimed assets in Kenya on the UFAA website, then tell us in the comments how it went.
Here's what I've learned so far: you don't need to be wealthy to be organised. Good organisation comes from doing small things in a great way.
Try this today. Write down everything you own, including the digital things, and next to each one, who should receive it. Leave out PINs and passwords. This isn't a legal will, but it's the closest first step toward one.
Tune in for the will essentials in the next episode.
