WHEN EASY MONEY CALLS

Kevin is broke, but the kind of broke that still dreams loudly.

He is sitting in a noisy kibanda near the stage, staring at a stranger’s phone screen as though the digits on it can change his life before the tea gets cold. Across the table, a man in a clean shirt and polished shoes speaks in a low, confident voice. “This is clean money,” he says. “Small input. Big return. You just need to move fast.”

Kevin feels his heart beat harder.

Not because he trusts the man.

Because he wants to.

That is how greed begins. Not with a scream. Not with a warning. It begins with a whisper that says, this time, you are finally getting your chance.

Kevin has been chasing soft life for months. Every day he tells himself this is the last struggle season. The last time he sleeps in a bedsitter with a leaking roof and a stubborn landlord. The last time he counts coins before boarding a matatu. The last time he pretends he is okay when he is not.

He wants to rise.

Not slowly. Not with small boring steps.

He wants one miracle and one miracle only.

That is why Brayo notices him.

“You look like a man who is tired of small money,” Brayo says.

Kevin laughs. “Who is not?”

Brayo leans closer. “Then stop thinking like everyone else. Real money does not announce itself. Real money finds those who are ready.”

Kevin should walk away there.

Instead, he listens.

Brayo says he works with people who move cash for importers and exporters. He says the money is already there. He says all Kevin needs to do is help with a temporary transfer, a little processing, a small deposit to unlock the bigger amount.

Kevin frowns. “That sounds risky.”
