Threading & How it Affects Mobile App Performance
What is a Thread?
To understand a thread, think of your mobile app as a busy restaurant kitchen. The CPU (Processor) is the kitchen itself, and a Thread is a single chef working inside it.
A thread is the smallest sequence of programmed instructions that an operating system can manage and execute independently. If you have only one chef (a single-threaded application), that chef can only do one task at a time. They have to finish chopping the onions before they can start boiling the water. If they get stuck opening a tightly sealed jar, the entire kitchen grinds to a halt.
The Two Sacred Realms: Main Thread vs. Background Threads
In mobile development (iOS and Android), the operating system splits the kitchen into two distinct roles:
1. The Main Thread (The UI Thread)
This is your head chef. The Main Thread has one job, and it must never be interrupted: managing the user interface. It listens for screen taps, tracks swipes, and redraws the pixels on the screen 60 to 120 times every single second.
2. Background Threads (Worker Threads)
These are your line cooks. They operate behind the scenes. Their job is to handle heavy,...
