After Three Years of Unemployment, I Finally Got My Dream Job. Then My Boss Asked Me to Meet Him in a Hotel Room.
"Sorry sir, I can't do it."
"I'm sorry too, then I can't help you. That's my condition for giving you the job."
The manager pushed a complimentary card across the table.
"You can leave now. Anyway, keep this. In case you change your mind."
I stood up reluctantly and walked out of his office.
This was the third job I had applied for in a month, and once again, I was walking away empty-handed.
My name is Kayode Temilola, a 27-year-old graduate of the University of Benin.
I graduated in 2024, and ever since then, I had been unemployed.
I attended several interviews, but most of the jobs had already been reserved for people with connections. The vacancies were announced merely for formality.
The few genuine opportunities I found always came with a price.
Sometimes I was asked to pay huge sums of money.
Other times, the demands were far worse.
"Meet me at this hotel."
"Let's discuss your employment privately."
At first, I didn't understand what they meant.

And no, it wasn't the normal kind of meeting.
It was the kind that came with conditions no respectable woman wanted to hear.
Before anything else, I put my Christian values first.
I couldn't do such things.
Although there were times I questioned God, I still believed He had a plan for me.
I kept telling myself that my suffering was only temporary.
