Nora kept nothing from the year Leo died.
No photos. No shirts. No half-empty cologne bottles.
Except one thing.
A voicemail. Three minutes, eleven seconds. Left at 7:52 PM on the night of October 12th. He’d called her from a number she didn’t recognize—a burner, the police later said. They asked why. She never found out.
In the message, Leo sounded lighter than she remembered. Almost rehearsed.
“Hey, you. Rooftop. Eight o’clock. Don’t be late for once.”
A laugh. A pause. Then: “I have to tell you something. The kind of thing you say in person.”
