The corporate memo arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning, pinned to the communication board with an aggressive, neon-orange thumbtack. It bore the sterile, sharp letterhead of Apex Logistics and a title that sent an immediate shiver down Maya’s spine: The Regional Director Initiative.

For three long years, Maya had practically lived on the forty-second floor. She knew the quirks of the ancient espresso machine, the exact angle to kick the printer to stop it from jamming, and every single client account like the back of her hand. If Julian secured a lunch meeting with a major tech client, Maya countered by hosting a late-night dinner presentation for their oldest, most loyal manufacturing account.

Their desks faced each other across a low glass partition, meaning every sigh, every furious keystroke, and every triumphant phone call was on full display.
