On the outskirts of Watamu, in an abandoned center, sits a humble makuti-thatched café. To others, it looks ordinary, but to people who rely on it daily, it is a lifeline.
Every evening at exactly 6:00 p.m., Ken sat alone on the same wooden bench outside the café.
He always ordered two cups of coffee.
One for himself.
And one for the woman he loved.
The strange part?
She vanished three years ago.
Her name was Marina.
They had loved each other since they were teenagers. They promised to be together no matter the challenge. They would grow old together.
But one evening, Marina didn't show up.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just gone.
Ken searched everywhere until he gave up.
Still, every evening at the same time, he visited their favorite café and ordered two coffees.
Until one evening, a waitress placed an envelope beside his cup.
"Someone asked me to give you this," she said.
Ken froze.
On the envelope were four words.
"Please don't hate me."
Inside the envelope was a letter.
Ken,
If you're reading this, I've finally found the courage to tell you the truth.
I never left because I stopped loving you.
I left because I discovered I was ill, and couldn't bear seeing you sacrifice your life for me.
I wanted you to forget about me and find someone who could give you the future I couldn't.
But there is one thing I never managed to stop doing...loving you.
Tears filled Ken's eyes.
At the bottom of the letter was a final sentence:
"Come to the old train station at 7:00 p.m. tonight."
Ken ran.
When he arrived, the station was almost empty.
Then he heard a familiar voice.
"Ken?"
He turned.
Marina stood there.
Older.
Emaciated and weaker.
But smiling through her tears.
Ken couldn't speak.
He walked towards her.
"Why did you come back?" he whispered.
Marina smiled.
"Because I finally realized something"
"What?"
She reached for his hand.
"Love isn't about having forever; it's about making whatever time you have together worth remembering"
Ken pulled her into his arms.
For the first time in three years, neither of them cared what tomorrow would bring.
That evening, they held each other beneath the station lights and loved like they had all the time in the world.
