The Girl Who Studied Hearts — And Broke Mine

I should have known better. You don't fall in love with someone who spends her days studying the human body and still manages to act like she has no idea what she's doing to yours.

Her name was Amara.

Third-year medical science student at the University of Nairobi. Tall, the kind of tall that makes you stand up straighter when she walks into a room. She had this habit of tucking her pen behind her ear and forgetting it was there, then spending ten minutes looking for it while you watched and said nothing because the looking was the most beautiful thing you'd ever seen.

We met at a seminar. Not the romantic kind — a public health seminar in a hall that smelled like old chairs and ambition. She was seated two rows ahead of me, annotating her notebook so aggressively I thought she was arguing with it. I leaned forward and whispered, "Is the notebook winning?"

She turned around slowly. Looked at me the way doctors look at X-rays — like she was reading something inside me I hadn't consented to show.

Then she smiled. Just a little. Just enough.

That was my first mistake.

We became friends the way fires become infernos — gradually, then all at once. Study sessions that started at 7pm and ended at 2am, empty coffee cups between us like gravestones of every hour we should have been sleeping. She would explain the lymphatic system to me like it was poetry. I would pretend I needed the explanation just to hear her talk.
