The Girl I Have Become
Chapter 1: The Girl in the Mirror
I sometimes look at myself in the mirror and wonder when I became this girl.
The girl who smiles even when her heart is tired.
The girl who says, “I'm fine,” because explaining the truth feels like too much work.
The girl who used to cry over little things but now wipes her tears quickly, afraid that someone might see them.
I wasn't always like this.
There was a time when I was soft. I trusted people easily. I believed every “I love you.” I believed that when someone promised to stay, they actually meant it.
I gave people pieces of my heart without asking what they planned to do with them.
I thought being good to people meant they would be good to me too.
I was wrong.
My name is Amara, and this is the story of how I became the girl standing in front of that mirror.
---
“Amara!”
I heard my mother's voice from downstairs.
“I'm coming!”
I quickly wiped the tears from my face and looked at myself again.
Nobody needed to know I had been crying.
Not today.
I fixed my hair, picked up my bag and walked downstairs.
My mother was standing in the kitchen, arranging food into a small container.
“You're going to school without eating again?” she asked.
“I'll eat later, Mum.”
She looked at me for a few seconds.
Mothers have a strange way of knowing when their children are lying.
“You've been saying that for weeks.”
I smiled. “I'm okay.”
She sighed.
“There is that word again.”
“What word?”
“Okay.”
I laughed softly. “Because I am okay.”
She didn't answer.
Instead, she pushed the food container into my hands.
“Take it.”
I hugged her from behind.
“Thank you, Mum.”
She touched my cheek.
“Whatever is bothering you, Amara, don't let it change the beautiful person you are.”
For some reason, those words hurt more than anything.
Because I knew I was already changing.
And I didn't know how to stop it.
---
When I got to school, I saw him.
Daniel.
He was standing near the gate with his friends, laughing like nothing in the world could ever hurt him.
The moment our eyes met, his smile disappeared.
Mine did too.
Three months ago, seeing Daniel was the best part of my day.
Now, I prayed not to see him at all.
“Amara,” my friend Tolu called from behind me. “Are you coming?”
I looked away from Daniel.
“Yeah.”
I walked past him without saying a word.
“Amara.”
I stopped.
His voice.
That voice I once loved so much.
I slowly turned around.
Daniel walked toward me.
“We need to talk.”
I stared at him.
“There's nothing to talk about.”
“There is.”
“No, Daniel. There isn't.”
He lowered his voice.
“Please.”
That one word almost broke me.
Almost.
But I remembered the night I had cried until my eyes hurt.
I remembered the messages I sent that he ignored.
I remembered waiting for him while he was somewhere else with someone else.
Most importantly, I remembered the promise I made to myself.
Never again.
So I smiled.
Not because I was happy.
But because I had finally learned how to hide my pain.
“I'm sorry,” I said. “You don't get to come back just because you finally miss me.”
His eyes widened.
“Amara, that's not what—”
I walked away before he could finish.
My heart was beating so fast that I could barely breathe.
But I didn't turn around.
For the first time, I chose myself.
---
That evening, I stood in front of my mirror again.
I looked at the girl staring back at me.
She looked different.
Stronger.
But somewhere behind her eyes, I could still see the little girl who wanted to be loved.
I touched the mirror gently.
“I know you're tired,” I whispered.
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“But we'll be okay.”
I smiled through the tears.
Maybe becoming stronger didn't mean becoming heartless.
Maybe growing up meant learning that you could love people deeply without losing yourself.
And maybe the girl I had become wasn't someone I needed to be ashamed of.
Maybe she was someone I should finally be proud of.
I wiped my tears.
Then I smiled at my reflection.
Tomorrow would be another day.
And this time, I would face it as the girl I had become.
I was about to turn away from the mirror when my phone suddenly vibrated.
I frowned.
It was an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then another message came.
UNKNOWN: Amara, you don't know me, but I know the truth about Daniel.
My heart stopped.
A second message appeared.
UNKNOWN: And if you want to know why he left you three months ago, meet me tomorrow at 5 p.m.
I stared at the screen.
My hands began to shake.
Then one final message came.
UNKNOWN: Come alone. And don't tell your mother.
Tomorrow was going to change everything.
