The Girl from the Library
Brian joined campus with one dream to change his life. He came from a small village where people believed success only belonged to rich families. Life at the university was not easy. Sometimes he skipped lunch to save money. Sometimes he stayed awake all night reading because he feared failure.
One Monday afternoon, while walking to the library, he saw a girl sitting outside under a tree. She wore a simple black hoodie and headphones. Her books were spread around her, but she looked stressed.
As Brian passed, one of her papers flew away because of the wind.
“Hey!” she shouted.
Brian quickly ran after it and caught it before it landed in a muddy puddle.
“Thank you,” she said with a smile.
That smile stayed in Brian’s mind the whole day.
Her name was Lisa.
After that day, they kept meeting in the library. Sometimes they studied together. Sometimes they joked about lecturers who gave too many assignments. Slowly, they became close.
Lisa was different from other girls Brian had met. She was calm, hardworking, and kind. She never cared that Brian wore the same sneakers every week or that his phone had a cracked screen.
One evening, rain started heavily while they were leaving the library.
“We’re finished,” Lisa laughed. “I forgot my umbrella.”
Brian removed his hoodie and held it above both of them as they ran through the rain. By the time they reached Lisa’s hostel, both of them were wet and laughing loudly.
“You’re crazy,” Lisa said.
“But you’re smiling,” Brian replied.
From that day, something changed between them.
They started spending more time together. They ate at small kibanda hotels near campus, shared notes, and walked together after classes. Friends around campus already knew they liked each other, even before they admitted it.
One Friday night, the university held a music event. Lights filled the campus field as students danced and sang along to songs.
Brian and Lisa sat on the grass away from the crowd.
“Can I ask you something?” Brian said nervously.
Lisa looked at him. “What is it?”
Brian took a deep breath.
“I know I’m not rich. I know my life is not perfect. But every time I’m with you, life feels easier. I think… I’m in love with you.”
For a few seconds, Lisa said nothing.
Brian’s heart beat fast.
Then Lisa smiled softly.
“You took too long to say it,” she whispered.
Brian laughed in relief.
That night became one of the happiest moments of his life.
But campus love was not always easy.
In third year, pressure increased. Assignments became harder. Brian got a part-time job to support himself. Lisa also became busy with projects and internships.
Sometimes they argued over small things. Sometimes they barely had time for each other.
One day, after a misunderstanding, Lisa stopped answering Brian’s calls.
For two weeks, they did not talk.
Brian felt empty. The library felt quiet without her. Even campus itself seemed different.
One evening, Brian saw Lisa sitting alone near the football field.
He walked slowly toward her.
“I miss my best friend,” he said quietly.
Lisa looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“I miss mine too.”
That was enough.
They talked for hours that night. They apologized, laughed, and promised to fight for each other no matter how hard life became.
Years later, on graduation day, students celebrated everywhere. Cameras flashed. Parents hugged their children proudly.
Brian stood beside Lisa in his graduation gown.
“Can you believe we made it?” Lisa asked.
Brian smiled and held her hand.
“The best thing campus gave me was not a degree,” he said.
Lisa looked at him.
“It was you.”
