Chapter One: The Look

Talia Nwoye arrived at university knowing exactly who she was supposed to be.

She had been raised carefully, by scripture, by routine, by rules that left little room for questions. Love was simple where she came from. It had a shape, a direction, a destination. Anything outside of that was distraction, temptation, something to be prayed away.

So when she met Leila Mensah, she didn’t think much of it at first.

Leila was confident in a quiet way. Not loud, not attention-seeking. Just present. She spoke easily, laughed freely, and seemed comfortable with herself in a way Talia had never learned. They shared classes, then conversations, then the kind of familiarity that grows without either person noticing when it began.

What Talia noticed,slowly,was the way Leila looked at her.

It wasn’t obvious. It wasn’t inappropriate. But it lingered. A softness in her eyes. An attentiveness that felt personal. When Talia spoke, Leila listened as though nothing else mattered. When their eyes met, Leila didn’t rush to look away.

At first, Talia told herself she was imagining it.

People admired . She was used to that. But this felt different. It made her aware of herself in a way that was unfamiliar, almost uncomfortable. As though something about her was being seen that she hadn’t given permission to notice.

And slowly, curiosity crept in.

Not curiosity about Leila,about herself.

Why did the attention make her nervous?

Why did she replay conversations afterward?

Why did she care?

Leila, unlike Talia, spoke openly about who she was. About attraction. About having loved both women and men. About figuring herself out early and refusing to feel ashamed of it. She never pushed these conversations. Never hinted. Never crossed a line.

She simply existed honestly.

And that honesty unsettled Talia more than secrecy ever could.

One evening, they found themselves alone in Leila’s hostel room. The air felt heavier than usual, charged with everything they had never said out loud. Conversation drifted, slowed, then softened into silence.

Talia’s heart was racing.

“I’ve never really questioned myself before,” she said suddenly, the words escaping before she could stop them. “I was taught who I’m supposed to love. I just… followed that.”

Leila looked at her, gentle and attentive. “And now?”

Talia swallowed. “Now I don’t know.”
