The midday heat in Eldoret was unforgiving, but inside the vault of Apex Logistics, it was freezing.

Belinda adjusted her glasses and stared at the steel shipping crate sitting in the center of the room. As the head compliance officer, her job was simple: open random imports, verify the contents against the manifest, and sign the clearance. She had done it thousands of times.

But this crate didn't have a manifest. It only had a handwritten note taped to the lock: “Do not open until the clock strikes 1:00 PM.”

It was currently 12:45 PM.

"Just cut the lock, Belinda. We are already three hours behind schedule, and the trucks are lining up outside," muttered Gavin, the yard manager. He was nervously tapping his heavy boots against the concrete floor, his face slick with sweat despite the air conditioning.

"We follow protocol, Gavin," Belinda said firmly, though her heart was starting to thud against her ribs. "Look at the shipping company name on the side.
