THE SECRET MY HUSBAND BURIED

Chapter 4: The Daughter Who Wasn't Dead

“Your daughter is alive.”

The man's words refused to leave my head.

I stared at David.

He couldn't even look at me.

“Is that true?”

Silence.

“David!”

He finally raised his eyes.

“Sarah, please.”

“Don't please me.”

My voice shook.

“You told me my daughter died.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

He looked at the stranger.

“From him.”

The stranger smiled.

“My name is Daniel.”

My heart stopped.

Nobody moved.

I stared at him.

“Daniel?”

He nodded.

“The Daniel you were told was dead.”

My knees became weak.

I grabbed the back of the sofa.

“You're alive?”

He smiled sadly.

“Apparently, I'm difficult to kill.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She was staring at him like she'd seen a ghost.

“You said Daniel died.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I thought he did.”

David stepped forward.

“Daniel, you shouldn't have come here.”

Daniel laughed.

“You buried me once.”

He pointed toward the door.

“You don't get to bury me twice.”

I looked between them.

“Someone tell me what is happening!”

Daniel's expression softened.

“You deserve the truth.”

He walked toward me.

David immediately blocked him.

“Stay away from her.”

Daniel stopped.

“Still protecting her?”

David said nothing.

Daniel looked at me.

“Five years ago, you discovered something.”

“What?”

“You discovered that David wasn't the man you thought he was.”

David's face hardened.

“Don't.”

Daniel ignored him.

“You found documents proving that your husband had been stealing money from his business partners.”

I looked at David.

“Is that true?”

He remained silent.

Daniel continued.

“You confronted him.”

My head began hurting.

A memory flashed.

A dark office.

Files scattered across a desk.

My voice:

“You stole millions.”

David's voice:

“You don't understand.”

Another flash.

Daniel entering the room.

“Sarah, we need to leave.”

Then—

A gunshot.

I grabbed my head.

“Stop!”

Daniel stopped speaking.

“I remember.”

Everyone looked at me.

“I remember the office.”...
