Luanda Makere had never trusted maps that didn't move.
She'd grown up in Benguela, in a house that smelled of salt and diesel, where her grandmother kept a drawer of old nautical charts that had gone soft and brown at the edges. As a girl, Luanda would trace the coastlines with her finger and ask why the lines never changed, when the sea outside her window never sat still for a single hour.
"Because paper is patient," her grandmother said. "The sea is not."
Luanda grew up to become the kind of person who was never quite satisfied with patient things. She studied hydrology in Luanda city β a coincidence of names she found endlessly funny, introducing herself at conferences as "Luanda, from Luanda, studying water" β and then spent a decade chasing rain across three continents, building sensor networks...
