The Billionaire’s Double
The heavy scent of engine oil, welding sparks, and old rubber filled the expansive air of Nuru’s Auto Repairs, a busy garage located in the heart of Nairobi’s Industrial Area. Underneath the chassis of a battered matatu, Nuru Maina was covered in dark grease, his muscles straining as he tightened a stubborn suspension bolt. At thirty-two, Nuru was a man of simple reality. He was a master mechanic, respected by his workers and loved by his community for his honesty. He worked fourteen hours a day just to keep his small business afloat and provide for his younger siblings.
His reality fractured at 3:00 PM on a hot Tuesday afternoon when a brand-new, multi-million-shilling black armored Mercedes-Maybach pulled into the dusty yard of his garage, completely out of place among the broken engines and scrap metal.
The door opened, and a slick, elderly lawyer in a bespoke three-piece suit stepped out, accompanied by two massive security guards. He walked straight toward Nuru, who was wiping his greasy hands on a rag.
"Nuru Maina?" the lawyer asked, reviewing a digital tablet. "My name is counsel Mutua. I represent Malik Shah, the chief executive officer of Afritech Global."
"The tech billionaire?" Nuru asked, frowning. "If he wants his car serviced, he’s in the wrong part of town."
"He doesn't want his car serviced, Mr. Nuru. He wants your face," counsel Mutua said, turning the tablet around.
Nuru stared at the screen and gasped. Displayed on the screen was a high-definition corporate headshot of Malik Shah. The resemblance was absolutely terrifying. They were identical doppelgängers—same rich dark skin tone, same sharp jawline, same height, and same intense dark eyes. They looked like twin brothers separated at birth, though born to entirely different worlds.
"Mzee Malik has received credible, high-level corporate espionage and physical security threats ahead of the Pan-African Tech Summit at the KICC this week," the lawyer explained quietly. "State security needs him out of the public eye to neutralize the threat. We need a body double—someone to wear his suits, sit in the VIP exhibition booths, and wave at the media for three days. The compensation is ten million shillings. Enough to buy this entire block."
Nuru looked at his struggling garage, then at the photo of the billionaire. The risk was immense, but the reward meant absolute financial freedom for his family.
"Deal," Nuru said.
Within forty-eight hours, Nuru was stripped of his grease, scrubbed clean by luxury skincare specialists, and dressed in bespoke, million-shilling Italian suits that fit his athletic frame perfectly. His handler for the assignment was Malaika Kimani, Malik’s chief operating officer and closest confidante.
Malaika was a stunning, imposing thirty-year-old woman with a razor-sharp intellect and a reputation for...
