Farming is all about passion

The alarm clock hadn't gone off yet, but Juma was already awake. It was 4:30 AM. Outside, the world was a canvas of deep indigo, and the air carried the sharp, clean chill of the dawn.

Most people in the town viewed the soil as dirty, a chore, or a relic of the past. To Juma, it was a living, breathing partner.

He walked out to the paddocks, a bucket of feed in hand. As his boots crunched against the dew-soaked grass, a low, rhythmic chorus of grunts and bleats welcomed him. It wasn't just about the market price of a mature bull or the weight of a goat at auction. It was the quiet pride of watching a weak, newborn calf take its first shaky steps, nursing it to strength, and seeing it thrive under his care.

Later that morning, Juma stood at the edge of his maize field. The green stalks stood tall and uniform, rustling gently in the breeze like a field of emerald silk. Two months ago, a fierce dry spell had threatened to scorch the young shoots. His neighbors had shaken their heads, advising him to cut his losses. But passion doesn’t calculate logic; it calculates dedication. Juma had spent back-breaking nights hauling water, checking soil moisture by feel, and meticulously tending to the roots.

Now, looking at the burgeoning cobs, the exhaustion vanished.

A businessman from the city once asked him, "Why do you sweat out here when you could buy and sell grain from an office?"

Juma had smiled, picked up a handful of the rich, dark earth, and let it crumble through his fingers. "Because an office can’t give you the joy of creation," he had replied. "A ledger shows you profit, but the land shows you life."

Farming wasn’t a default choice for Juma, nor was it just a business strategy. It was a calling. It was the patience to wait on the rain, the resilience to fight the pests, and the unshakeable belief that what you pour your heart into will eventually feed the world. As the sun finally broke over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and gold, Juma wiped the sweat from his brow and smiled. He was exactly where he belonged.
