She Carried the World on Her Back
She Carried the World on Her Back
At exactly 4:00 a.m., before the first rooster crowed and while the rest of the neighborhood was still asleep, Mary slowly opened her eyes.
She hadn't slept much.
The cold floor beneath the thin mattress had left her body aching, but there was no time to think about pain. Beside her lay her two children, peacefully asleep under a faded leso that had long replaced the blankets they could no longer afford.
For a few seconds, she simply watched them.
Their innocent faces reminded her why she had not given up.
She gently kissed each of them on the forehead before quietly standing up. The tiny one-room house was dark. The electricity had been disconnected weeks earlier because she could no longer pay the bill. The charcoal stove sat in the corner, cold and empty.
She opened the cupboard.
Nothing.
Not a single packet of maize flour.
No rice.
No beans.
Not even enough sugar to make tea.
She closed the cupboard slowly, pretending it didn't hurt.
Outside, the chilly morning air welcomed her as she picked up two empty buckets and walked nearly two kilometers to fetch water from the communal tap. Every step reminded her how exhausted she was.
As she returned, two women standing near a kiosk looked at her and whispered.
"That's the woman whose husband disappeared."
"I heard he started another family."
"No wonder she struggles."
Mary heard every word.
She lowered her head and continued walking.
She had learned that sometimes silence was stronger than explaining herself.
Years earlier, life had been different.
She had fallen in love with a man who promised to stand beside her forever. Together they dreamed of building a small home, educating their children, and growing old together.
But dreams can disappear.
When life became difficult and jobs became scarce, arguments became frequent. One morning, he packed a small bag.
"I'll come back when things improve," he said.
Mary believed him.
She waited.
One week became one month.
One month became one year.
Then another.
He never returned.
No phone calls.
No school fees.
No food.
No support.
Only silence.
From that day...
