The village of Kijani rested quietly between green hills and dusty roads where life moved slowly with the rhythm of the sun.
Every morning before dawn, roosters crowed across the valley while smoke rose from small kitchens preparing tea and sweet potatoes for breakfast. Farmers walked toward their fields carrying hoes over their shoulders. Children in oversized school uniforms laughed as they crossed narrow paths through maize farms.
Most young people in Kijani dreamed of leaving.
They talked endlessly about the city.
The bright lights.
The tall buildings.
The fast money.
To them, the village felt like a place people escaped from.
But twenty-year-old Daniel saw things differently.
He believed success could grow even from dry soil.
Daniel lived with his mother and younger sister in a small iron-sheet house near the edge of the village. Life had never been easy for them.
During dry seasons, crops failed.
Sometimes electricity disappeared for days.
The nearest hospital was many kilometers away.
Jobs were rare.
