The house was too quiet that evening.

Lena stood in the kitchen, one hand resting on her swollen belly, the other gripping the edge of the counter as a strange unease crept over her.

She was seven months pregnant, exhausted in a way sleep could not fix. Her husband, Mark, had told her he would be late from work again.

But his car was already parked outside.

She moved slowly down the hallway.

Then she heard voices.

Mark’s voice.

And another man’s cold, polished, unfamiliar.

Lena stopped outside the study door.

“I want confirmation,” the stranger said. “Once the child is born, the transfer must be immediate.”

Silence.

Then Mark replied.

“You’ll have the baby. That’s what we agreed. I just need the remaining payment cleared.”

Lena’s heart slowed, as if her body refused to accept the meaning forming in her mind.

A chair scraped.

The stranger spoke again.

“You understand what this child is worth to my family. Heir replacement isn’t cheap.”

A long pause.

Then Mark, quieter:

“She doesn’t suspect anything. She thinks this is a normal pregnancy.”

Lena’s hand slipped from her belly.

The world tilted.

Her unborn child.

A price.

A transaction.

She backed away silently, every step a struggle against collapse.

No one noticed her leave the hallway.

No one noticed the door close softly behind her.

But inside the study, her husband had just sold their child.

That night, Lena did not sleep.

She lay beside Mark, listening to his steady breathing, studying the man she had loved for five years.

The next morning, Mark kissed her forehead before leaving for work.
