Mama Waitherero’s Last Step Into Dawn
The day everything changed did not look unusual. The air was calm, and the sky was pale, as though the sun itself was hesitating. Waitherero was eating her breakfast in the kitchen when her grandmother called her name with a voice that seemed unsure if it would hold.
“Waitherero, my child… come here.”
Mama Wanjiru, Waitherero’s grandma, stood in the living room, clutching a handkerchief that trembled slightly in her hand.
