“Where Dreams Fight Hunger Every Day”

Morning in the ghetto does not begin with alarms.

It begins with noise.

Roosters crowing somewhere between mabati houses. Loud gospel music from a neighbor’s radio. Women arguing at the water point before sunrise. Children crying. Someone coughing endlessly in the next room.

And just like that…

another day begins.

The iron-sheet houses heat up quickly once the sun rises. Smoke from charcoal stoves fills narrow paths between houses as mothers prepare weak tea and yesterday’s leftovers for breakfast.

If there is breakfast at all.

In the ghetto, survival is the first job every morning.

Young boys wake up early to search for mjengo jobs that may never come. Others gather around betting shops hoping luck might change their lives faster than hard work ever did.

Some girls leave home before sunrise for jobs nobody asks questions about anymore.

Not because they want to.

Because rent does not wait.

Hunger does not care about dreams.

And poverty has no mercy.
