The morning mist always hung low over the old-growth trees of Karen, giving the affluent Nairobi suburb an air of quiet, wealthy mystery. For Makena, that mist was a protective blanket. For three years, she had worked tirelessly to build Makena Luxury Spaces, an boutique interior design firm catering to the elite of Kenya. Her clients knew her as an elegant, highly educated woman who had spent years studying design abroad, a sophisticated professional who moved through high-society galas with effortless poise.

They did not know that her real name was Makena Gatimu, the daughter of David Gatimu, a former government minister who had systematically embezzled billions of shillings meant for public health projects before fleeing the country to a non-extradition island. When the scandal broke five years ago, Makena’s world had exploded. Her friends vanished, her family assets were frozen, and her name became synonymous with corporate greed and national betrayal. She had survived by changing her last name legally, cutting off all ties to her past, and burying her history deep beneath layers of corporate rebranding.

Silas Mwamba was a legend in Kenyan media. A fierce, uncompromising investigative journalist, he had spent the last four years in London winning international awards for exposing high-level corruption across East Africa. He had recently returned to Nairobi to launch an independent investigative agency and had purchased a historic, sprawling colonial-era mansion in Karen that required a complete interior overhaul.

"I don't care about your portfolio of flashy hotels, Ms. Makena," Silas said during their first meeting on the steps of his empty mansion. He was a broad-shouldered man in his mid-thirty, with sharp, piercing eyes that seemed to read a person’s thoughts, and a neatly trimmed beard. He wore a simple cotton shirt and heavy boots, completely out of place among the wealthy elite of the neighborhood, yet radiating an undeniable power. "I care about integrity. I like my spaces minimalist, transparent, and honest.

No hidden compartments, no fake walls. I expect the same from the people who work for me."

Makena felt a cold chill run down her spine, but she maintained her pristine, professional smile. She adjusted the silk scarf around her neck.

"Transparency is the core value of my design process, Mr. Silas. I assure you, what you see is exactly what you get."

As the project began, Makena found herself spending more time at the Karen estate than at any other job site. Silas was a hands-on client, fascinated by the architectural history of the house.

They spent long afternoons walking through empty rooms, discussing how to restore the original mahogany floors, selecting neutral color palettes, and debating the placement of large, modern African art pieces.

Silas discovered that beneath Makena's impeccably polished, almost icy corporate exterior lay a woman of profound artistic genius...
