Tunde has been arrested.

The words entered my ears slowly like p0is0n.

“What?”

Chief Emeka lowered his phone carefully.

“They picked him up this morning in Abuja.”

Fear tightened around my chest immediately.

“Picked him up for what?”

He looked uncomfortable for the first time since arriving.

“They said he attacked somebody at a hotel.”

“No,” I whispered instantly. “Tunde can’t do that.”

Chief Emeka sighed heavily.

“You don’t know the full story.”

I stared at him angrily.

“And you do?”

Before he could answer, my phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

My heart jumped immediately.

Ngozi.

I answered quickly.

“Hello?”

Heavy breathing came from the other side.

Then her frightened voice whispered:

“They know I contacted you.”

My body went cold instantly.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t say on phone.”

“Please tell me what’s happening!”

She sounded close to tears now.

“Your father was not the only person Chief Emeka destr0yed.”

Chief Emeka’s face darkened immediately as he tried listening closely.

I stood up quickly and moved away from him.

“Ngozi please—”

“You need to see the documents.”

“What documents?”

“The company records your father copied before he d!£d.”

My breathing stopped briefly.

“What?”

Chief Emeka suddenly shouted:

“Stop filling her head with lies!”

Ngozi panicked instantly.

“He’s there with you?!”

The call ended immediately.

I stared at the dead phone screen helplessly.

Chief Emeka rubbed his face tiredly.

“This woman is mentally unstable.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Funny. Everybody accusing you suddenly becomes unstable.”

His jaw tightened.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“Protect me from what? The truth?”

Silence.

My mother suddenly stood up angrily.

“You need to leave this house.”

Chief Emeka looked at her calmly.

“Mama Amara—”

“Don’t call me that!” she snapped. “You’ve caused enough pain already.”

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Chief Emeka looked directly at me.

“You may hate me now, but I swear I never planned to hurt you.”

Tears filled my eyes again immediately.

“Everything around you is lies.”

Pain crossed his face deeply.

“I truly loved you.”

I wanted to hate him completely.

I truly wanted to.

But the painful part was… I believed him.

And that made everything worse.

Because if he truly loved me, why destroy my life this way?

Why keep such a terrible seçret?

Why hide the truth about my father?

He walked toward the door slowly.

Then he paused.

“If anybody contacts you again about old company matters, be careful.”

Fear entered my chest immediately.

“What does that mean?”

His eyes met mine.

The moment his car drove out, my mother locked the gate immediately like she was shutting e√il outside.
