FULL STORY

Rain tapped softly against the salon windows as Amara finished braiding her last client of the evening. Her back hurt, her fingers ached, and exhaustion sat heavily in her chest, but she still smiled politely as the woman stood to inspect her hair.

“You really have magic hands,” the client said, admiring herself in the mirror.

Amara smiled faintly. “Thank you.”

After the woman left, silence filled the small salon. Amara slowly swept the floor while glancing at her five-year-old son asleep on the couch, curled beneath a tiny Spider-Man blanket.

Everything she did was for him.

Jayden.

The little boy who gave her strength even on days she wanted to break apart.

Her phone vibrated suddenly.

Unknown Number.

She ignored it.

It rang again.

Annoyed, she answered. “Hello?”

Silence.

Then a familiar voice.

“Amara.”

The broom slipped from her hands.

Her heart stopped instantly.

No.

It couldn’t be.

“Ethan?” she whispered.

The same Ethan who disappeared after learning she was pregnant.

The same Ethan who blocked her everywhere.

The same man who chose another woman while she suffered alone.

“I know you probably hate me,” he said quietly.

Amara laughed bitterly, though tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Hate you?” she repeated. “You vanished for five years.”

“I was scared.”

“You were selfish.”

Another painful silence followed.

“I’m back in Nairobi,” he finally said. “Can we talk?”

Amara stared at her sleeping son.

The child Ethan had never seen.

The child she raised through sleezes nights, unpaid rent, and endless tears.

“There’s nothing to talk about,” she replied coldly.

Then she hung up.

But the trembling in her hands lasted long after the call ended.

That night, memories refused to let her sleep.

She remembered being nineteen and hopelessly in love.

She remembered Ethan promising forever.

She remembered the day she told him she was pregnant.

And she remembered how quickly love turned into distance.

At first he stopped replying quickly.

Then excuses started.

Then one day he disappeared completely.

Amara went through pregnancy alone.

She gave birth alone.

Cried alone.

Survived alone.

And somehow, after years of pain, she finally learned how to breathe again without him.

So why did hearing his voice hurt this much?

The next morning, Amara dropped Jayden at school before heading to work.

But when she arrived at the salon, her boss stood outside with folded arms and a serious face.

“We need to reduce workers,” she announced.

Amara’s stomach dropped immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words shattered her entire world.

By afternoon, she was jobless.

Again.

Amara walked home slowly under the hot Nairobi sun, trying hard not to cry in public. Rent was overdue. School fees were pending. Food prices kept rising.

Life never gave her a break.

As she crossed the road absentmindedly, loud hooting suddenly filled the air.

A black car sped toward her.

Everything happened too fast.

Strong arms pulled her backward just before the vehicle rushed past.

Amara gasped in shock.

“You okay?” a deep voice asked.

She looked up.

And for a moment, the world became still.

The man standing before her was tall, calm, and painfully handsome. He wore a simple black shirt with rolled sleeves, revealing tattooed arms and an expensive watch.

But it was his eyes that caught her attention.

Gentle.

Concerned.

Real.

“I’m fine,” she whispered breathlessly.

“You almost died,” he muttered.

His name was Adrian.

And meeting him changed everything.

Unlike Ethan, Adrian was patient.

Soft.

Intentional.

He noticed little things.

How Amara pretended to be strong even when she was exhausted.

How she skipped meals to make sure Jayden ate first.

How she smiled while hiding pain behind her eyes.

Adrian owned several businesses in Nairobi, but despite his wealth, he carried himself simply.

No arrogance.

No games.

He helped Amara get a job managing one of his beauty spas. The salary was better than anything she had ever earned.

For the first time in years, life slowly became easier.

Jayden adored him almost immediately.

“Mum, can Uncle Adrian come again?” the little boy would ask excitedly.

And every time, Amara’s heart became more confused.

Because Adrian treated both of them like they mattered.

Something Ethan never did.

Then Ethan returned.

Not through phone calls.

Not through messages.

But physically.

One rainy evening, Amara left work only to find him standing outside her apartment building.

Older.

More mature.

More handsome.

But still carrying the same eyes that once broke her heart.

“You look good,” he said softly.

Amara crossed her arms immediately.

“What do you want?”

His gaze shifted nervously.

“I heard about Jayden.”

Her body stiffened.

“How?”

“A friend told me.”

For a moment, Ethan looked emotional.

“He’s really mine?”

Amara laughed bitterly.

“Now you care?”

“I made mistakes.”

“Mistakes?” Her voice cracked. “You abandoned us!”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t know,” she snapped angrily. “You don’t know what it feels like begging landlords for more time. You don’t know what it feels like giving birth with nobody holding your hand.”

Tears filled Ethan’s eyes.

“I thought I wasn’t ready.”

“And I was?”

Silence swallowed them.

Then he whispered the words Amara once prayed to hear.

“I never stopped loving you.”

But instead of happiness, anger burned inside her chest.

Because where was that love when she needed it most?

Things became more complicated after Ethan learned about Adrian.

Jealousy consumed him instantly.

“Are you dating him?” he demanded one evening.

“That’s none of your business.”

“He’s around my son.”

Amara laughed coldly.

“Interesting. Now he’s your son?”

Ethan clenched his jaw.

“I’m trying to fix things.”

“You can’t fix five years of abandonment overnight.”

And deep down, Amara knew the truth.

Part of her still loved Ethan.

Not the man he became.

But the memory of who he once was.

And memories were dangerous.

Weeks passed.

Ethan kept trying.

He bought toys for Jayden.

Paid school fees.

Sent flowers.

Apologized endlessly.

But healing had changed Amara.

She no longer confused attention with love.

And Adrian made that even clearer.

One night after closing the spa, Adrian found her crying quietly in the office.

Without words, he sat beside her.

“I’m scared,” she admitted softly.

“Of what?”

“Making the wrong choice again.”

Adrian looked at her for a long moment before speaking.

“The right person won’t make love feel painful all the time.”

Those words broke something inside her.

Because for years, love had only brought her tears.

Yet with Adrian, everything felt safe.

Easy.

Peaceful.

Days later, Ethan showed up drunk outside her apartment.

“I can’t lose you again,” he confessed painfully.

Amara stared at him sadly.

“You already lost me years ago.”

He looked shattered.

“I changed.”

“I believe you did.”

“Then why can’t we try again?”

Amara’s eyes filled with tears.

Because sometimes love alone wasn’t enough.

Sometimes people returned after destroying everything.

And sometimes healing meant accepting that the version of yourself who once begged for them no longer existed.

“I forgave you,” she whispered softly.

Hope flashed in Ethan’s eyes.

But then she continued.

“…but I can’t love you the same way anymore.”

Silence.

Pure heartbreak.

And for the first time, Ethan finally understood the damage he caused.

Months later, life looked different.

Amara moved into a better apartment.

Jayden started a new school.

The spa business flourished under her management.

And Adrian remained steady beside her through it all.

No confusion.

No disappearing.

No half-love.

One evening, as Nairobi’s city lights glowed beautifully around them, Adrian held her hand gently.

“You know,” he murmured, “you were healing when I met you.”

Amara smiled softly.

“And you didn’t interrupt it.”

“No,” he whispered. “I just wanted to love you correctly.”

Tears filled her eyes instantly.

Because after years of heartbreak, survival, and disappointment…

Someone finally did.
