The neon sign of Club Veloce flickered against the damp, cracked pavement of a side street off River Road, Nairobi. This wasn't the polished, secure nightlife of Westlands; this was the downtown core, where the music was too loud, the smoke was too thick, and the deals made in the VIP corners were rarely legal.

Kendi dialed down the brightness of her phone screen as she sat at a corner booth in the club's crowded upper lounge. Kendi’s entire body went rigid. She slowly looked up to find a man standing over her booth, completely cutting off her line of sight to the exit. It was Mwangi, the club’s enigmatic head of security. He was a menacingly handsome man in his early thirties, broad-shouldered, wearing a sleek black leather jacket over a dark t-shirt....
