Courtroom Etude in Biege and Regret
The Honorable Judge Archibald Pettigrew was having a day that could curdle milk. A broken pipe in his chambers, a tedious morning of petty larceny, and now, the distinct, eye-watering aroma of cheap whiskey and existential despair wafting from his final defendant.
The man before him, one Reginald "Reggie" Puddle, swayed gently on his feet, a beatific smile plastered across his face. His suit was a masterpiece of rumpling, his tie was doing its own thing, and one eye seemed to be independently surveying the ornate ceiling of the courtroom.
"Mr. Puddle," Judge Pettigrew began, his voice like gravel being slowly crushed. "You have been brought before this court on a charge of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The officer states he found you attempting to serenade a fire hydrant with a rendition of 'My Way' at 3 o'clock in the afternoon."
Reggie’s good eye swiveled down to meet the Judge’s. The smile never faltered. He processed the words with the speed of a sloth on a sedative.
"Brought here… for drinking," Reggie repeated slowly, as if deciphering a profound legal scripture. A spark of pure, unadulterated joy ignited in his bleary gaze. He straightened up as much as his spine would allow, slapped a hand on the wooden barrier, and beamed at the entire courtroom.
