The morning rush hour at the Machakos Junction bus terminal was nothing short of chaotic. Amidst the shouting of conductors and the roaring engines of Nairobi-bound matatus, Mwende stood behind the counter of her small, neatly kept diner, The Sweet Ukambani Bite. Her hands moved with practiced grace, rolling out perfectly layered chapatis onto a hot, sizzling tawa. She was twenty-four, fiercely independent, and famous for making the softest chapatis in the entire county.

Her peaceful routine shattered when her phone buzzed loudly on the counter. It was a notification showing she had been added to a new WhatsApp group titled Traditional Dowry Planning: Musyoka & Syombua.

Mwende frowned, flipping a chapati. She didn't know a Musyoka, and she certainly wasn't a Syombua. Before she could type a message to exit, a message popped up from the group administrator, a contact saved only as a phone number.

“Syombua, please stop playing hard to get and confirm if your family prefers goats or cows from the Machakos side. We need to finalize the budget today!”

Mwende scoffed. Her Kamba pride kicked in. She quickly typed back: “Listen, Mr. Budget Planner. I don't know who your Syombua is, but if she is as spicy as your tone, I pity her. You have the wrong number. Check your digits before you stress an innocent person.”

A few seconds later, the private chat lit up. It was the administrator.

“My apologies, stranger. I am Mutua. I am trying to manage my stubborn brother's wedding committee, and my fingers slipped on the contact list. But since you mentioned spicy... do you always attack strangers before breakfast?”

Mwende couldn't help but chuckle. “Only when they accuse me of hiding cows, Mutua.”
