Boniface Milimo-Why Kenyan Artists Continue to be Badly Exploited

BONIFACE MILIMO is the director of Tukuza Awards/Tukuza Network, a private entity that empowers artists through recognition, training, and workshops as a means of celebrating their ministry and impact. In this interview with SILAS NYAMWEYA, he shares insights on the recent court rulings on royalty distributions in Kenya and how artists can avoid unscrupulous middlemen in royalty collections.

Briefly introduce yourself

I was born in Vihiga County in a family of 8 kids. I am the last born but my mum and dad pass on when I was in school. I am also an event and artist manager, having been in the industry for over 20 years. I also work with a Community Organization that advocates for the rights of artists.

Tell us about Tukuza Awards/Tukuza Network

Tukuza Awards is a Kenyan annual gospel award that is organized in different parts of the country. The award is essentially geared towards uplifting, appreciating and awarding various talents within the gospel industry. Other than gospel artists, the award also celebrates personalities in the media industry such as those working for radio, TV, dancers and other gospel ministers. Every year, artists who make it at the top receive various awards including trophies, certificates, opportunities for music recording, media tours to selected media houses and other amazing gift vouchers.
