It was a cold and unusually quiet Saturday morning when Joe stepped off a motorcycle taxi outside a modest apartment complex on the outskirts of town.
He paid the rider, adjusted the strap of his shoulder bag, and stood for a moment before the iron gate. Joe was on his way to visit his friend Martin, who had recently moved into the apartments.
Joe was used to attracting attention
wherever he went. As a transgender man, he had long ago accepted who he was and had embraced his identity completely. He dressed confidently, carried himself proudly, and no longer worried about the opinions of strangers.
Pushing open the gate, he walked into the compound.
As he reached for his phone to call Martin and confirm the house number, his heart sank. The battery had died.
"Perfect timing," he muttered.
Looking around, he decided to knock on one of the doors and ask for directions.
