Your Budget Is Not a Plan. It Is a Wish List You Update Every Month.
You have made this budget before. You have made it on your phone, in a notebook, in a Google Sheet that you shared with no one and have not opened in three months. You have made it after a particularly brutal fourth week, in the particular clarity that comes from having KSh 347 in your account and twelve days until payday. In that moment, the budget was serious. The numbers were honest. The categories were specific. You allocated rent, food, transport, savings. You even created a column for “entertainment” and gave it a number that felt responsible. You sent the file to yourself. You felt, briefly, like someone with a financial life.
Then the 28th came. The money arrived. The queue collected. An unexpected cost appeared: a medical bill, a burst tyre, a friend’s wedding you had forgotten to budget for. By the 10th, the budget had been silently abandoned and you were living the same way you always live: spending what is available, slowing down when it runs thin, waiting for the next cycle to reset the experiment.
