M-Pesa Did Not Make You Poor. It Made Your Poverty Frictionless.

You once waited in a queue. You withdrew cash, counted it, and handed it to someone who also counted it. The physical exchange created a moment of reckoning: you could see the money leaving, feel its weight reduced, watch the stack thin. There was friction. Friction slowed you down. Slowing down sometimes saved you.

M-Pesa removed the friction. It made spending as effortless as breathing: a few taps, a PIN, a sent notification, and the money is gone before the thought has finished forming. This is genuinely miraculous. It is also genuinely dangerous, because the same quality that makes M-Pesa brilliant for paying rent at midnight is the quality that makes it catastrophic for impulsive decisions at a party in Westlands at 11pm when you are three drinks in and someone is passing a hat for the DJ.
