The First Week of the Month Is a Performance. The Last Week Is the Truth.
You know this rhythm. The first of the month arrives and something lifts. The account has a number in it. The Fuliza is cleared. The borrowing from the previous cycle is settled, at least most of it. There is a version of yourself that exists only in the first week of the month: the one who pays full price without checking M-Pesa twice, who says yes to after-work drinks without calculating the Uber home, who buys the medium coffee instead of the small one. This version is generous, relaxed, and present. This version will not survive to see the 21st.
Nairobi has a monthly personality disorder and most people have made peace with it. The first week is Java, Westgate, after-work at the rooftop bar in Westlands.
