Your Salary Is Not Your Money. It Is a Queue.
The alert comes in and for exactly forty-five seconds, you are wealthy. You see the number. You feel something; relief, briefly, then a rapid calculation that begins before you have even unlocked your phone. Rent. Electricity. The M-Pesa you borrowed from your cousin two weeks ago. The HELB deduction that comes out before you ever see the figure in full. By the time you have put the phone down, the number is already smaller in your head than it was on the screen.
This is not a budgeting problem. It is a sequencing problem. Your salary does not arrive and then get distributed. It arrives already distributed. The queue was assembled in the days before payday, in the conversations that began with “si utanisaidia” and ended with a figure, in the deductions your employer processes before the net amount ever reaches your account, in the obligations that have your name on them even though you were never formally asked to sign.
Kamau gets paid on the 28th. By the 29th, he has sent KSh 8,000 home, split between his mother’s household and his younger brother’s school fees. By the 1st, his rent has gone....
