CHAPTER ONE
Two Birthdays, One Secret
Birthdays were supposed to be special.
For some people, they came with laughter, expensive gifts, and unforgettable memories.
For others…
They were just another painful reminder of everything they never had.The first rays of sunlight slipped through the broken window of Nadia Cole’s tiny bedroom.
She slowly opened her eyes and smiled to herself.
Today was her twenty-second birthday.
She had promised herself she wouldn’t cry this year.
Maybe…
Just maybe…
Life would finally be kind to her.
“Nadia!
Aunt Martha’s sharp voice shattered the silence.
“If you think your birthday means you’re getting a day off, you’ve lost your mind!”
Nadia sighed before climbing out of bed.
“I’m coming, Aunt Martha.”
Within minutes, she was already washing dirty dishes, sweeping the compound, fetching water, and preparing breakfast.
Her birthday had barely begun…
Yet she had already completed more work than most people did before noon.
When breakfast was finally ready, Nadia quietly reached for a plate.
Before she could serve herself, Aunt Martha pulled the pot away.
“There isn’t enough.”
Nadia glanced at the three full pots on the table but said nothing.
“I’m not hungry anyway.”
It was a lie.
She hadn’t eaten since yesterday evening.
Still…
She smiled.
She always smiled.Several miles away…
The Hart Mansion looked like something out of a fairy tale.
Luxury cars filled the driveway.
Fresh flowers decorated every hallway.
Servants hurried from one room to another, making sure everything was perfect.
It had to be.
Today was Natalie Hart’s twenty-second birthday.
Natalie stood before a full-length mirror as her stylist adjusted the sparkling gown she would wear to the evening celebration.
She smiled at her reflection.
Behind her, Richard Hart entered the room carrying a small velvet box.
“Happy birthday, Princess.”
Natalie laughed.
“Dad… another gift?”
“Open it.”
She carefully lifted the lid.
A pair of luxury car keys rested inside.
She stared at them in disbelief.
“Is this…”
Richard nodded proudly.
“Your new Rolls-Royce.”
Natalie squealed before throwing her arms around him.
“You always spoil me.”
“You deserve it.”
Just then, Evelyn Hart walked in carrying an elegant jewelry case.
“I couldn’t let your father have all the fun.”
Natalie smiled.
“Mom…”
Inside the box lay a breathtaking diamond necklace.
“It belonged to my grandmother,” Evelyn said softly.
“And now…
It belongs to you.”
Natalie’s eyes became misty as Evelyn fastened it around her neck.
“I’ll treasure it forever.”
Neither mother nor daughter noticed the old newspaper clipping tucked inside the jewelry box.
Its faded headline read:
ONE TWIN FOUND… THE OTHER STILL MISSING.Across town…
Nadia spent the entire day working at the roadside café.
She smiled at customers.
Cleaned tables.
Served food.
And ignored the pain in her empty stomach.
By the time the café closed, exhaustion had taken over.
Then…
Her phone rang.
The caller ID made her smile instantly.
Damien ❤️
She answered before the second ring.
“Happy birthday, beautiful.”
“I was waiting for your call.”
“I know.”
“When are you done?”
“Right now.”
“I’m outside.”
Nadia hurried out of the café.
Damien was waiting beside his car with two neatly wrapped gift bags.
A warm smile spread across her face.
“You brought gifts again?”
He laughed.
“It’s your birthday.”
“You’ve been doing this every year since we started dating.”
“And I’ll keep doing it.”
Nadia accepted the first bag.
Inside was a beautiful cream-colored dress.
The second contained a matching pair of elegant flats.
“They’re beautiful.”
“I hoped you’d like them.”
She looked up at him with grateful eyes.
“You always know exactly what I need.”
After four years together…
Damien knew her better than anyone.
He knew she preferred simple clothes.
He knew she never spent money on herself.
He knew the little things made her happiest.
Nadia hugged him tightly.
“Thank you.”
For a brief moment…
Everything felt perfect.
She imagined the future they had talked about for years.
A small home.
A family.
A wedding.
She believed it was only a matter of time.
Then Damien’s phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen for only a second before locking it.
“I’m so sorry, babe.”
“I have to leave.”
“So soon?”
“My boss called.”
Nadia smiled gently.
“It’s okay.”
“We’ll celebrate properly another day.”
“I promise.”
He kissed her before getting into his car.
Nadia stood there smiling until his taillights disappeared into the evening traffic.
She never imagined…
He wasn’t driving to work.Forty minutes later…
The Hart Mansion echoed with music and laughter.
More than two hundred guests filled the grand ballroom.
As Damien walked in, Natalie ran into his arms.
“You made it!”
“I told you I wouldn’t miss your birthday.”
She smiled.
Damien grinned.
A waiter approached with a black velvet box.
Damien opened it.
Inside lay a dazzling diamond bracelet.
The tiny diamonds reflected the ballroom lights like stars.
Natalie gasped.
“It’s gorgeous.”
He gently fastened it around her wrist.
Engraved on the inside were the words:
Forever Begins With You.❤️
Before Natalie could recover from the surprise, the ballroom lights dimmed.
A giant screen lit up.
The Eiffel Tower appeared beneath a sky full of fireworks.
Golden letters slowly appeared across the screen.
PARIS FOR TWO
Damien took Natalie’s hand.
“We leave next week.”
Her eyes widened.
“You planned all this?”
“I wanted to give you a birthday you’ll never forget.”
The guests applauded.
Then…
Damien slowly lowered himself onto one knee.
The entire ballroom fell silent.
He opened another velvet box.
A breathtaking diamond engagement ring sparkled beneath the chandeliers.
“Natalie Hart…”
“I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life.”
“Will you marry me?”
Tears rolled down Natalie’s cheeks.
Without hesitation…
She nodded.
“Yes.”
The room erupted into applause.
Richard Hart proudly shook Damien’s hand.
Evelyn wiped away happy tears.
As Damien slipped the ring onto Natalie’s finger…
A strange thought crossed his mind.
What were the chances…
That both of the women he loved celebrated their birthdays on exactly the same day?
He smiled to himself.
Probably just a coincidence.
He had no idea…
The two women whose hearts he now held…
Had shared far more than a birthday before fate tore them apart.
Some secrets remain buried for years… but when the truth finally surfaces, it destroys everyone in its path.
What happens when Nadia discovers that the woman wearing Damien’s engagement ring is the sister she never knew existed?
