For the first two years, Amelia never regretted leaving her job.

Not once.

Every sacrifice felt worth it.

Every struggle felt temporary.

Every difficult day felt like another brick laid toward the future she and Marcus were building together.

They were a team.

Or at least she believed they were.

Their tiny apartment seemed to shrink by the day.

The peeling paint on the walls had become impossible to ignore.

The kitchen sink leaked constantly.

The bedroom fan worked only when it felt like it.

But somehow, Amelia loved every inch of that place.

Because it held their dreams.

Because every sacrifice made there was made together.

Because every night Marcus would pull her into his arms and whisper about the future.

And Amelia believed every word.

One rainy evening, Marcus burst through the front door carrying a stack of papers.

His face was glowing.

“Amelia!”

She looked up from the dining table where she had been organizing household expenses.

“What happened?”

“I got it.”

“What?”

“The contract.”

For a moment Amelia simply stared.

Then realization hit.

“The contract?”

Marcus nodded excitedly.

“The construction project.”

The one he had spent nearly a year pursuing.

The one every investor had rejected.

The one everyone said was impossible.

The one Amelia had sacrificed nearly all her savings to help him pursue.

“Oh my God.”

She jumped to her feet.

Marcus lifted her off the ground.

Laughing.

Spinning.

Both of them nearly crashing into the couch.

“We did it.”

“We did it.”

Amelia felt tears filling her eyes.

For months they had survived on almost nothing.

Every coin had been carefully counted.

Every bill carefully planned.

Every luxury removed.

And now it was finally happening.

That night they celebrated with street food and soda.

Neither cared.

They felt rich already.

Later, lying in bed, Marcus turned toward her.

“I couldn’t have done this without you.”

Amelia smiled.

“You would have.”

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“I mean it.”

He reached for her hand.

“You gave up your career.”

“You invested your savings.”

“You stood by me when nobody else believed.”

Amelia squeezed his fingers.

“Because I love you.”

Marcus smiled.

“And one day I’ll make sure all of it was worth it.”

At the time, she believed him.

Completely.

Months turned into years.

The company began growing.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

Then faster still.

Each successful project opened the door to another.

And another.

And another.

Soon Marcus wasn’t just surviving.

He was succeeding.

Amelia became the invisible engine behind everything.

She managed paperwork.

Answered calls.

Scheduled meetings.

Prepared presentations.

Handled invoices.

Tracked expenses.

Managed household responsibilities.

And still found time to support Marcus emotionally whenever things became difficult.

When investors called.

She answered.

When clients visited.

She welcomed them.

When deadlines approached.

She stayed awake helping Marcus prepare.

People praised Marcus constantly.

They called him brilliant.

Visionary.

Exceptional.

A self-made success.

Amelia smiled every time she heard it.

Even though she knew the truth.

No one is truly self-made.

Not really.

One evening they attended a business event.

Marcus was becoming well known.

People surrounded him constantly.

Shaking hands.

Taking photos.

Offering congratulations.

Amelia stood nearby.

Watching proudly.

Then she overheard a conversation.

One businessman laughed.

“Marcus, your success story is inspiring.”

Marcus smiled.

“Thank you.”

“You built everything from absolutely nothing.”

The man raised his glass.

“That’s rare.”

Amelia waited.

Certain Marcus would mention her.

Even casually.

Even briefly.

Instead Marcus smiled.

“Yeah.”

A pause.

Then:

“It wasn’t easy.”

Nothing else.

The conversation moved on.

The moment passed.

Nobody noticed.

Except Amelia.

The sting surprised her.

For years she had been beside him.

Believing in him.

Supporting him.

Helping him.

Sacrificing for him.

Yet in that moment...

she disappeared.

When they got home she laughed it off.

“By the way.”

Marcus loosened his tie.

“Hmm?”

“You forgot to mention me.”

“What?”

“Earlier.”

She smiled.

“The self-made speech.”

Marcus laughed.

“Oh.”

Just oh.

“It wasn’t a big deal.”

Amelia forced a smile.

“No, I guess not.”

Marcus kissed her forehead.

“You know what you mean to me.”

And somehow...

that was enough.

The next morning she pushed the feeling away.

Because Marcus was tired.

Because he was stressed.

Because he loved her.

Because marriages required understanding.

Because nobody was perfect.
