It was 9:42 PM on a Tuesday when Sarah, a client I remotely supported, emailed me.
"The tracking sheet is broken again. Someone accidentally deleted the column formulas. We can’t dispatch drivers tomorrow morning until this is fixed. Please help."
I opened the Google Sheet. It was a terrifying labyrinth of 45 columns, cross-referenced tabs, complex conditional formatting, and brightly colored cells meant to resemble a pipeline. This single, fragile spreadsheet ran a 4-million-dollar logistics operation.
The client knew they needed real software, and I knew I could do better than offering endless midnight spreadsheet support for critical operations. They had looked into enterprise alternatives like Salesforce and specialized ERP tools, but the quotes they received were staggering: $50,000 upfront for implementation, plus $150 per user, per month. For a small business with 25 employees, that is a crippling annual software tax.
So, they stuck with the broken spreadsheet. And I was stuck fixing it at midnight.
