THE GAMBLE OF LIFE

Episode 1: Gambling in Politics

The city never slept during campaign season. Streets were painted with smiling faces on posters, loud promises echoed through dusty marketplaces, and every corner carried a different version of hope. To the poor, politicians were messiahs. To the rich, they were investments. To themselves, they were survivors in a dangerous game.

Ethan was different, or at least he believed so.

At twenty-nine, he entered politics carrying dreams larger than his pocket. He spoke passionately against corruption, condemned tribal hatred, and promised transparency. The people adored him because he sounded sincere in a country where sincerity had become rare.

His mother warned him one evening while they shared tea under the dim veranda light.

“Politics is not leadership anymore,” she whispered. “It is gambling with souls.”

Ethan smiled softly.

“Then I will change the game.”

But politics never changes for anyone. It changes people instead.

Weeks into the campaign, wealthy businessmen approached him quietly. They offered vehicles, publicity, and money for rallies. In return, they wanted future favors once he gained office. Ethan hesitated. His principles resisted, but his ambition negotiated.

“It’s only temporary,” he convinced himself.

That was the first bet.

Soon, his speeches changed. Truth became flexible. He began promising impossible things because crowds applauded fantasies more than honesty. He discovered that fear mobilized voters faster than unity. Lies traveled quicker than integrity.

The higher he climbed, the more pieces of himself disappeared.

His closest friend Marcus confronted him one night.

“You once wanted to serve people,” Marcus said bitterly. “Now you manipulate them.”

Ethan looked away.

“You cannot survive in politics while remaining innocent.”

Marcus shook his head slowly.

“No. You simply chose survival over conscience.”

Election day arrived like judgment. Crowds sang his name wildly. Women danced. Youth celebrated. Ethan won by a landslide.

Yet victory felt strangely empty.

Inside his luxurious office weeks later, Ethan stared through the glass windows overlooking the city. Children still begged on the streets. Hospitals still lacked medicine. Unemployment still suffocated families. The promises that once sounded revolutionary had become distant echoes buried beneath political alliances and hidden deals.

Power had not freed him.

It had consumed him.

For the first time, he understood what his mother meant. Politics was not merely governance. It was a casino where human hope became currency, and every leader gambled between morality and ambition.

Some lost elections.

Others lost themselves.

Outside, supporters continued chanting his name with blind loyalty, unaware that the man they celebrated no longer resembled the one they elected.

Ethan closed his eyes heavily.

The greatest tragedy in politics was not losing power.

It was winning it at the cost of your soul.
