The house did not recover from the night before.

It fractured.

By morning, the tension had settled into something colder, sharper—no longer hidden behind polite silence or controlled distance. The servants avoided eye contact. Doors closed more quietly. Even the walls seemed to hold onto what had been said, what had been revealed.

Nothing was the same.

Zara stood by the window in her room, her arms folded tightly as her gaze lingered over the grounds. The world outside remained untouched—orderly, calm, almost mocking in its stillness.

Inside—

Everything was unraveling.

Behind her, the door opened.

She didn’t turn.

She already knew.

“You heard everything.”

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

But not distant.

Zara closed her eyes briefly.

Then faced him.

“Yes.”

There was no reason to lie anymore.

Ethan remained at the doorway, his posture rigid, his expression controlled—but his eyes…

They held something new.

Not confusion.

Not doubt.

Certainty.

“I always suspected,” he said slowly.

Zara’s chest tightened.

“But hearing it…” he continued, his voice lowering, “is different.”

She nodded once.

“It is.”

Silence stretched between them.

Then—

Ethan moved forward.

Not toward her.

But past her.

Stopping near the window.

“They wanted me out of the way,” he said. “Not dead.”

Zara watched him carefully.

“You’re not sure of that,” she said.

Ethan didn’t respond immediately.

Because she was right.

“They miscalculated,” he added.

A pause.

“They always do.”

Zara stepped closer.

“And now?”

Ethan’s gaze remained fixed outside.

“Now,” he said quietly, “they’ll try to control what’s left.”

Zara’s breath slowed.

“And you’ll let them?”

Ethan finally turned.

His eyes met hers.

“No.”

The answer came without hesitation.

For the first time—

There was no doubt in him.
