Titus didn’t sleep properly that night.

Not because he was excited.

Not because he was afraid.

But because his mind no longer knew where to settle.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the kitchen again—movement, pressure, precision… and the moment everything shifted when they looked at him differently.

Not as a worker.

Not as a helper.

But as something closer to… necessary.

And that word unsettled him more than anything else.

The next morning, he returned to the hotel kitchen earlier than usual.

No one had called him.

No one had told him to come.

But he came anyway.

And that alone already felt like a change.

When he entered, the atmosphere shifted again—but differently this time.

Not confusion.

Not irritation.

Recognition.

A few chefs glanced at him briefly, then returned to their work.

No insults.

No questioning.

Just awareness that he was now part of something they couldn’t ignore anymore.

“Wash up,” the head chef said without looking at him.

Titus obeyed.

But this time, the obedience felt different.

Not forced.

Not expected.

Accepted.

For the first time, Titus was assigned a proper station.

Not at the edge.

Not observing.

Inside.

Close enough to matter.

A junior chef stood beside him, visibly unsure.

“You’re working here now?” the junior asked quietly.

Titus didn’t answer immediately.

Because even he wasn’t sure what “now” meant.

“I guess,” he said finally.

The service began.
