Naomi did not say goodbye to Gabriel.

Not because she hated him.

Not because she was angry.

But because she knew…

if she looked at him one more time—

she would stay.

And staying would destroy her slowly.

The morning was quiet when she finished packing.

Too quiet.

Leon sat silently on the edge of the bed holding his small bag against his chest.

The little boy no longer asked questions.

That scared Naomi more than tears.

Children should cry.

Children should protest.

Children should complain when life hurts them.

But Leon had learned silence too early.

Naomi folded the last sweater carefully and placed it inside the worn bag.

Her hands trembled the entire time.

This was not how she imagined losing Gabriel.

Not after surviving years beside him.

Not after carrying him through death itself.

To lose him to memory…

felt crueler somehow.

A soft knock interrupted the silence.

Eleanor stepped inside slowly.

The older woman looked exhausted.

Like she had not slept all night.

“You’re really leaving.”

Naomi nodded weakly.

“I have to.”

Eleanor’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

“This is your home too.”

Naomi smiled sadly.

“No.”

Her voice was gentle.

Not bitter.

That somehow made it worse.

“This was never my world.”

Silence settled heavily between them.

Eleanor stepped closer suddenly.

“You saved my grandson.”

Naomi lowered her eyes immediately.

“You gave him years no one else could.”

Tears slid down Naomi’s cheeks again.

“But he doesn’t remember those years.”

That one sentence shattered the room.

Because it carried all her pain inside it.

Everything she endured.

Everything she lost.

Everything she waited for.

Forgotten.

Eleanor reached for Naomi’s hands tightly.

“Please,” she whispered emotionally. “Stay until his memories return.”

Naomi closed her eyes painfully.

And finally admitted the truth she had been avoiding.

“What if they never do?”

Silence.

Eleanor had no answer.

Because sometimes love loses against fate.

And no amount of wealth can...
