The heavy, rusted key Malcolm found beneath the floorboards felt like a cold promise against his palm. It was the physical manifestation of a secret, a doorway to a version of reality that Olivia and the rest of the world could never touch. In the days following the storm, the atmosphere inside Foxworth Hall shifted. The air grew thinner, more brittle, as Malcolm’s obsession moved from quiet contemplation to feverish construction.

He began to hire workmen from three towns over—men who didn’t know the Foxworth name, men who wouldn't gossip at the local tavern about the strange modifications being made to the upper reaches of the mansion. He told them he was reinforcing the structure against the Virginia humidity, but the blueprints he clutched to his chest told a different story. He was building a cage lined with silk.

Olivia watched from the landing of the grand staircase, her hands gripped so tightly around the banister that her knuckles turned a ghostly white. She watched the crates being hauled up: fine linens, expensive wallpapers with delicate floral patterns, and furniture that belonged in a palace, not a dusty attic.

"The children need a tutor, Malcolm," she said one afternoon, her voice echoing through the hollow foyer. "Mal and Joel are growing wild. They need discipline, not a father who hides in the rafters like a common ghost."

Malcolm stopped at the base of the stairs, a roll of velvet tucked under his arm. He looked at his wife with a clinical detachment. "They are your responsibility, Olivia. I am busy ensuring that this family has a heart. At the moment, it is merely a body with two very loud, very clumsy limbs."
