Chapter Nine:
THE DOOR GOD OPENED
Miriam had spent years believing that her life had ended the day she walked away from her first marriage.
For a long time, she carried the past everywhere she went. She carried it when she prayed, when she sat alone and whenever she thought about Sarah. There were days when she wondered why God had allowed so much pain into her life. She had lost her marriage, her mother and then her daughter. At times, it felt as though every time she tried to stand, life found another way to bring her down.
But perhaps she had been looking at her life from the wrong side.
Sometimes what looks like destruction is actually preparation.
Sometimes God allows a door to close because He knows there is another one waiting to open.
The problem is that people often hold onto what God is asking them to release. They hold onto people who have already left. They hold onto places that no longer belong to them. They hold onto painful memories because letting go feels like admitting defeat.
But letting go is not defeat.
Sometimes letting go is the beginning of healing.
Miriam was slowly learning that lesson.
She had not forgotten Sarah. She had not forgotten everything she had suffered. But she had decided that she would not allow the past to steal whatever years God had left for her.
Her marriage to Ali was peaceful.
She did not enter it expecting perfection. She only wanted a home where she could breathe without fear.
Ali gave her that.
Daniel was still young when Miriam became part of his life, and at first he watched her carefully. Miriam understood. She did not try to replace his mother. She simply became another person who loved him.
She helped him prepare for school, cooked for him, listened to his stories and prayed with him. Slowly, Daniel began opening his heart.
He started coming to her whenever he needed help. Sometimes he sat beside her while she worked. Sometimes he called her when he was worried.
Miriam treasured those moments.
She had lost a daughter, but God had placed another child in her life.
It was not the same.
It did not have to be.
It was simply another blessing.
Ali watched the relationship between them grow, and it brought peace into his heart.
One evening, Miriam and Ali sat together outside the house. The evening breeze moved gently through the trees.
"I never thought I would have another chance at happiness," Miriam said.
"You deserve it," Ali replied.
"I was afraid at first. I kept wondering whether I was making another mistake."
Ali reached for her hand.
"You don't have to be afraid."
Miriam looked down at their joined hands.
"I want to stop living in the past."
"Then don't," Ali said gently. "What matters is the present and the future."
Miriam smiled.
For the first time in many years, she felt that perhaps God had not abandoned her after all.
Maybe he had simply been leading her somewhere she could not...
