Chapter Twelve:
THE CHILDREN WE LEFT BEHIND
The family that had once gathered under one roof was now scattered. Omar was gone. Fatuma had left with Inaya. Miriam had built a new life with Ali. Sarah was somewhere in the world, living under another name. And the people who had once been connected by marriage, blood and circumstance were now living separate lives without knowing how close their paths would eventually become.
Sometimes one decision can affect generations.
The people who make the mistake may eventually walk away from it, but the consequences can remain behind and follow their children. That was the painful truth about Omar's family. Fatuma remembered the insults. She remembered the way she and Omar's mother had spoken about Miriam. She remembered how proud she had been when Miriam finally left. At the time, she had thought she had won. Now she understood that there had been nothing to win. She had only inherited a broken family. Sometimes Fatuma would sit alone and wonder where Miriam was. She wanted to apologize. Not because apologizing would change the past. But because she had finally understood the damage she had caused. She searched for information about her. But Miriam was no longer where...
