Chapter Ten:
A BLESSING FROM THE PAST
Life in the nearby town slowly began to settle.
Omar and Fatuma rented a modest house and started the small business they had hoped would change their lives. It was nothing big, but for the first few months, things seemed to work.
Money started coming in.
They could afford food without worrying about where the next meal would come from. Fatuma could buy clothes for Inaya and meet some of her school needs without asking anyone for help.
For the first time in a long while, Fatuma felt relaxed.
She had forgotten what it felt like to sleep without thinking about debts.
Inaya continued with her studies. She was growing into a bright young girl, unaware of most of the struggles that had surrounded her childhood.
Fatuma watched her daughter and felt proud.
Perhaps, she thought, things were finally changing.
Omar also tried his best to make the business work. He knew that selling the land had been a difficult decision, but he reminded himself that part of the money had saved his mother's life.
For now, he chose not to think about what they had lost.
They had a new beginning.
At least, that was what he believed.
Miriam's life had changed in a completely different way.
She woke up every morning with gratitude in her heart.
Sometimes she would walk around the mansion and still find herself wondering whether the house truly belonged to her.
The spacious rooms.
The beautiful compound.
The quiet surroundings.
Everything felt like a dream.
But what touched her most was not the house itself.
It was what the house represented.
For years, she had thought that the land carried nothing but painful memories.
Yet somehow, without planning it, she had returned to that same place as a completely different woman.
She was no longer the frightened wife who had walked away with nothing.
She was now a wife again.
A mother figure to Daniel.
A woman who had survived.
And above everything else, she was finally at peace.
One morning, she decided to visit Mary.
There were things she wanted to share with the woman who had stood beside her during the darkest period of her life.
When Miriam arrived, Mary welcomed her warmly.
"My sister!"
Miriam smiled.
"I missed you."
They hugged before sitting together.
Mary looked at her carefully.
"You look different."
Miriam laughed.
"Different how?"
"Peaceful."
Miriam smiled.
"Maybe because God finally decided to give me a reason to smile."
