Chapter 1: THE WOMAN THEY CHOSE
Miriam was standing outside the kitchen door when she heard her name.
She stopped. Her hands were wet from washing the cups, and one of them slipped slightly between her fingers.
Inside the house, Omar's mother was speaking. "Miriam has been married to my son for years. How long are we going to keep waiting?" Miriam stood still where she was.
Omar's mother and his two daughters had arrived earlier that afternoon, and Miriam had gone outside to finish washing the utensils. She had expected their visit to be ordinary. She had welcomed them warmly, prepared tea and served them as she always did. She had no idea that they had come carrying words that would stay with her for years.
Another woman spoke. "What if Miriam is the problem?" Miriam's fingers tightened around the cup. For a moment, she stopped breathing. Then Omar's mother answered. "That is exactly what I have been thinking." Miriam slowly lowered the cup into the basin. The women continued talking. "He cannot spend the rest of his life waiting," one of the sisters said. "He will die without children," the other added.
Miriam's heart pounded. She pressed one hand against her chest. She had heard people whisper before. She had heard neighbours blame her. But hearing it from Omar's own family was different. She had always hoped that at least they would defend her.
Instead, they were discussing her as though she were a problem that needed to be removed.
Then Omar's mother spoke again.
"My son needs to think twice and make the right choice before it is too late."
There was a short silence.
Then one of the sisters asked, "Have you spoken to him?"
"I have," their mother replied. "But he is stubborn."
"What are you going to do?"
Miriam leaned slightly closer without meaning to.
She could hear her heart beating in her ears.
"I have already found someone."
Miriam froze.
"Someone?"
"A woman."
The cup in Miriam's hand trembled.
Omar's mother lowered her voice.
"Her name is Fatuma."
Miriam's stomach tightened.
She had never heard that name before.
"I have spoken to her already," Omar's mother continued. "She knows Omar is married, but she also knows he needs children."
One of the sisters gave a quiet laugh.
"So you have already made your plans?"
"What else can I do? Should I watch my son grow old without a child?"
Miriam felt a tear slide down her cheek.
She quickly wiped it away.
She wanted to walk into the room.
She wanted to ask them how they could sit inside her house and discuss replacing her while she was only a few steps away.
But something stopped her.
Fear.
Fear of what she might hear next.
Omar's mother continued speaking. "I have told Fatuma to be patient. She knows what she wants."
Miriam's eyes closed. What she wants! What did Fatuma want?
Her husband? Her home? Her life?
She felt a sharp pain in her chest.
For years, Miriam had prayed for a child. She had endured the whispers, the questions and the endless suggestions that perhaps she was the reason Omar had no children.
Yet through everything, she had believed one thing. Omar loved her.
She believed that no matter what his family said, he would stand beside her. Now she wasn't sure.
She quietly returned to the basin and continued washing the cups.
Her hands were shaking so badly that she nearly dropped another one.
Inside, the women continued talking. They did not know that Miriam had heard every word.
When they finally finished their tea, Omar's mother called Miriam."Miriam, thank you for the tea."
Miriam dried her hands on her dress before entering the house. She forced a smile. "You are welcome, Mama."
One of Omar's sisters stood up and adjusted her dress. "We should leave before it gets dark."
Miriam nodded. "Let me walk you outside."
She followed them to the doorway.
Omar's mother turned and looked at her.
For a moment, Miriam wondered whether she could see the pain hidden behind her smile.
"Take care of yourself," the older woman said.
"I will."
"And don't worry too much."
Miriam almost laughed. Don't worry too much?
(How could she not worry when the woman standing before her had just chosen another wife for her son?)
Instead, she simply nodded.
The women walked away slowly, their voices fading as they followed the narrow path toward the main road.
Miriam remained at the doorway until they disappeared from sight.
Only then did her smile disappear. She closed the door. The house suddenly felt too quiet.
She sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the floor.
Fatuma.
The name kept repeating in her mind. She had never met the woman. She didn't know what she looked like. She didn't know where she lived.
She only knew that Omar's mother had already decided that Fatuma would become part of her husband's life. Miriam wiped her eyes.
She could have confronted Omar the moment he returned. But something inside her told her to wait. She wanted to hear it from him.
If there was truly another woman, she wanted Omar to be the one to tell her.
When Omar finally came home from work, the sun was already disappearing.
He entered the compound carrying his usual small bag.
Miriam looked at him from where she was sitting. For several seconds, she said nothing.
Omar smiled. "You are quiet."
"Your mother came."
"Ooh."
"She brought your sisters too."
"I see."
(Miriam studied his face)
"What did she talk about?" Omar asked.
"She always talks about children," she said. Then she looked away.
She wanted to ask him about Fatuma. The name was burning inside her. But she didn't.
"Let's eat," she said.
Omar nodded.
That night, Miriam prayed longer than usual.
After Omar fell asleep, she quietly got out of bed and knelt beside the mattress.
She clasped her hands.
"God, you know my heart. You know how much I want a child. Please don't let my marriage be destroyed because of something I cannot control."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Give me strength."
She remained there for a long time.
She did not know that Omar's mother had already begun arranging meetings between her son and Fatuma.
She did not know that the woman she feared would soon become part of her husband's life.
And she did not know that her prayers were about to be answered in the most unexpected way.
The meetings between Omar and Fatuma began quietly.
Omar's mother had introduced them without Miriam's knowledge.
At first, Omar tried to convince himself that there was nothing wrong with meeting her.
He was only talking to her.
Nothing more.
But Fatuma knew how to get close to him.
She listened to his frustrations.
She told him that he deserved to have children.
She made him feel understood.
Slowly, Omar began spending more time with her.
He came home late.
He became distracted.
Sometimes Miriam would ask where he had been, and he would give her simple answers that sounded believable.
She never imagined the truth.
She still trusted him.
And perhaps that was what made the betrayal so painful.
Eventually, Omar allowed his mother's pressure to overcome his love for Miriam.
He married Fatuma secretly.
His family supported him.
They believed they had finally solved the problem.
Omar returned home carrying a secret that he knew would destroy Miriam if she discovered it.
He wanted to tell her.
Several times, he almost did.
But each time, fear stopped him.
He had already crossed the line.
He could not pretend he had not.
A few days after the marriage, Miriam woke up feeling strange.
She sat on the edge of the bed, confused by the nausea that had suddenly overcome her.
She covered her mouth and hurried outside.
After a few minutes, she began thinking.
Her period was late.
She counted the days once.
Then again.
Her heart began beating faster.
She remembered all the mornings she had prayed for this moment.
She immediately went to the clinic.
When the nurse confirmed that she was pregnant, Miriam stood silently.
She couldn't believe it.
After all those years.
After all those prayers.
She was finally going to become a mother.
Tears filled her eyes.
She smiled.
She walked home almost floating.
She could not wait to tell Omar.
She imagined his reaction.
She imagined the joy on his face.
She imagined the two of them holding their baby together.
She did not know that Omar had already married another woman.
She did not know that Fatuma was now part of her husband's life.
She only knew that her prayer had finally been answered.
Omar came home that evening.
Miriam was waiting for him.
The moment he entered, she stood up.
"Omar."
He looked at her.
"Yes?"
She walked toward him with a smile.
"I have something to tell you."
Omar smiled weakly.
"What is it?"
Miriam took his hands.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"We are going to have a baby."
Omar froze.
For several seconds, he could not move.
He stared at her.
Then his eyes slowly dropped to her stomach.
The woman he had betrayed was standing before him with the happiest news of their lives.
He felt something inside him collapse.
Miriam laughed softly through her tears.
"I knew God had not forgotten us."
Omar could not answer.
He wanted to tell her.
He wanted to confess everything.
He wanted to go back in time and refuse his mother's plan.
But he had already married Fatuma.
The marriage had happened.
His family knew.
Fatuma knew.
There was no way to erase what he had done.
Miriam wrapped her arms around him.
Omar stood still.
She thought he was overwhelmed with happiness.
She did not know that he was overwhelmed by guilt.
That night, Miriam slept peacefully for the first time in years.
She placed one hand gently over her stomach and smiled.
She believed her family was finally complete.
But Omar lay beside her with his eyes open.
He stared into the darkness, knowing that the child they had prayed for had finally arrived.
And knowing that, at the very moment God had answered their prayer, he had already broken the promise he made to Miriam.
