The next morning, Amelia woke to the sound of an argument downstairs.
She hurried out of her room.
A man stood in the foyer arguing with Adrian.
Amelia didn't recognize him.
He was older, with gray hair and a scar across his cheek.
“You should have stayed away from her,” the man said.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Leave my house.”
“You think marrying her will protect her?”
Amelia froze.
The man looked at her.
“So you're Amelia.”
Adrian immediately moved between them.
“Don't look at her.”
The man laughed.
“Still protecting her after all these years?”
Amelia's heart pounded.
“Who are you?”
The man ignored her.
“Tell her, Adrian.”
“Get out.”
